A team of researchers from University of College, London, led by Robin Ali, has demonstrated that retinal stem cells are capable of being transplanted into adult mouse retinas. Previously, they isolated retinal precursor cells from neonatal mice and transplanted them into visually impaired adult mice. Tests of visual acuity and tracking showed significant improvement. What's novel about this latest publication is that the stem cells were derived from optic cups grown under 3D culture conditions!
